EN 13724 in plain English: what European letterbox buyers actually check

The aperture size, security and weather points that decide whether a letterbox passes for EU projects — explained without the standards language.

Anyone who has sourced letterboxes for Germany, Austria, Switzerland or the Netherlands has met EN 13724. It is the European standard for private letter boxes, and for many buyers it is the difference between a product that sells into housing projects and one that sits in the warehouse. Here is what it actually covers — without the standards language.

What EN 13724 is (and is not)

EN 13724 defines the functional requirements for private letter boxes: the sizes mail must pass through, weather protection, security against theft and fishing, and durability. It is not a safety mark and not a law by itself — but housing associations, property developers and postal-preference buyers across central Europe specify it, so distributors treat it as the default requirement.

The checks buyers actually make

  • Does it take C4 envelopes flat? The aperture must accept standard C4 envelopes (229 × 324 mm) without folding. A slot that creases medical letters or A4 documents generates complaints within weeks.
  • Anti-fishing security. The interior must prevent fingers or tools from retrieving mail through the opening — baffles, Anti-theft flaps and internal depth all matter.
  • Weather performance. A sloped or hooded aperture, internal drainage and a finish that survives outdoor mounting are expected, because the box lives on the facade or at the gate.
  • Durability of the flap and lock. The front panel takes thousands of open-close cycles a year; hinges, flap return and lock barrels are tested against repeated use.
  • Corrosion protection. Galvanised steel with a proper powder coat — buyers in coastal and alpine regions check this first.

Where sourcing projects go wrong

The most common failure we see in samples from new suppliers is geometry: apertures sized for the North American market that fail the C4 test immediately. The second is weather protection — a flat slot with no hood lets rain sheet directly onto the mail. The third is gauge: thin sheet passes the showroom test and fails the durability test within a season.

How we build to the standard

At CNCT, the aperture is laser-cut to the C4 geometry, mail slots are formed with a weather hood and the interior is designed with anti-fishing depth. Bodies use hot-dip galvanised or galvannealed steel with outdoor-grade powder coating, and every new letterbox model is assembled and cycle-tested as a sample before mass production. Test units are available for your own inspection or for third-party review.
